Geotechnical contractor Nicholson Construction will deliver the foundations for a US$63M (£51M) 16-storey apartment block in Richmond, US.
The new 168-unit building will be in downtown Richmond near Virginia Commonwealth University’s campus on what is currently a surface parking lot.
The building, owned by Pinecrest Apartments, will include units with up to four bedrooms, a rooftop terrace, a gym and some retail space.
Nicholson was appointed by general contractor Rycon Construction to design and construct two types of auger cast piles. The design includes adapting the pile reinforcement to the actual loading conditions across the building.
A total of 306 auger cast piles will be installed as foundation elements to support the slab-on-grade foundation to depths of approximately 24m.
The work will be carried out by Nicholson’s teams across its Midwestern and Eastern regions.
Nicholson Construction Eastern Region senior vice president Dino Kartofilis said: “This is a unique job for us because we teamed up with our Midwest group to tap into their auger cast pile expertise.”
“It’s always great to join forces with other groups in the company to bring our clients the best possible team.”
The project is expected to be completed by summer 2024.
